What you’ll need to plant sunflower seeds in trays or pots Sunflower seeds Seed trays or pots Multipurpose compost A trowel or gardening fork A label and pen for the plant 1. Fill your seed trays or pots with peat-free multipurpose compost and leave 1 cm at the top to prepare. Push one seed gently into the compost in each of the seed pots. If you’re using a seed tray, space the seeds out about 5 centimeters apart.

- For each sunflower seed, make small trenches in the soil about 2.5 cm deep, leaving a 10 cm space between them. After that, cover each hole with soil and plant one seed in it.
- With a watering can, thoroughly water the seeds. Keep the seeds well-hydrated until they begin to sprout.
- Stakes or canes can be used to support the stems of sunflowers as they get taller by tying them loosely together with string. The plant will be shielded from strong winds by this, and the stem will remain sturdy and vertical.
